HELA Invitational 9s player of the tournament Bobby Julias says his dream is to play for the Hela Wigmen or the Mendi Muruks in the Digicel Cup competition.
The 19-year-old from Karel village in upper Mendi featured at fullback for the Pori Rockies in the two-day tournament, which saw him score a number of tries and line breaks to win the award.
Julias scored a double in the grand final but his side lost to Tari Blacks, who took out the top prize of K20,000.
He told The National after the tournament that he had left school after completing grade 10 at Mendi Secondary School.
“I am in the village because I didn’t go past grade 10 in 2021 so I just play rugby league for now to pass time,” Julias said.
“While I was at school I played in the school boys competition in Mendi. In 2022 I wasn’t in school anymore so I joined the Brothers club in the Mendi League.
“I played few games for our B grade side but was promoted to A grade where I started playing at fullback.
“I was fortunate enough to join the team from Hela this year, the Pori Rockies. Wining the best player’s award sort of puts me in the limelight so hopefully the Wigmen selectors noticed me.
“I always dream of playing for Wigmen or Muruks so if I can make it then it would be dream come true for me.
“I believe I have the potential but I just need an opportunity to really know what I’m capable of. I’m just hoping for any opportunity.”
Meanwhile, construction on the Wigmen home ground in Tari is nearing completion with club officials confident that the defending premiers will have a place to call home in the near future.
Club chairman Andy Hetra reitirated last week that the work on the stadium has resumed following a two-year wait due to the impact of the Coronavirus.
The PNG National Rugby League Competitions board has urged franchises to develop their respective home stadiums with an emphasis of bringing the game back to the people.
