FORMER Enga Mioks and Port Moresby Vipers winger Kora Lega has made his debut for the Coolum Colts Rugby League Club over the weekend in the Sunshine Coast Rugby League competition.
Lega was signed by Australia’s third tier competition club for the 2023 season and made his first appearance against Noosa in round two on Saturday.
Coolum Colts coach Matt Smith said the young and powerful outside back from Rigo, Central would be a valuable attack-weapon for his backline.
“Kora is lightning quick, he is strong and he will add a new dimension to our attack in 2023,” Smith said.
“From a defensive perspective, he loves to put his body on the line and we look forward to the energy he will bring on both sides of the ball.
“We’re excited to see Kora link up with his fellow PNG boys over the next two to three weeks also.”
Lega and Yahya Billy are some of the PNG boys inked by the Sunshine Coast Falcons feeder club in the Hostplus Cup. Both played together in the round two encounter.
The 22-year-old Bonanamo villager said while his focus was on work, he would also pay equal attention on building his rugby league career down south.
Lega said playing in the local league will open doors for him in venturing into the second tier competition in Queensland.
“I’m happy to be given the opportunity by Coolum Colts to play with them in Sunshine Coast,” the Central native told The National yesterday.
“Like all the PNG boys playing in Digicel Cup, I also want to live my dream here in Australia and play in the Hostplus Cup.
“Coolum Colts is the reserve A-grade for the Falcons, who are Melbourne Storm feeder club, so the pathway is there.
“If I do well this season then, hopefully have a crack for the Falcons and follow the way up.”
A role model to his Bonanamo community in Rigo, Lega is also a member of the Port Moresby-based Ave rugby club that won the 2022 Southern Region and POM Rugby (MRDC) 9s tournaments.
He featured for Mioks in 2020 and 2021 Digicel Cup season before joining Vipers last year.
Lega said he would commit himself to push Colts into a finals finish.
