Pora oval in the heart of Wewak town, East Sepik will change the tide of the province when it is finally breaking the dreadlocks and host the first home game for the season this year.
Affectionally known for producing some best soccer talents while also handful of great rugby league players also come from that province, the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup will now be formally introduced to the province, making it one of the other favourite local codes.
The Sepik Pride club is not only a lame football club, however since being moved in to settle there after being announced by the PNG National Rugby League competition boards as the 12th club, it has changed the people’s perception.
This club has gone as far as into the communities, making awareness of heathy living as well as simple campaigns of law-and-order problems and sporting as a whole.
“Sepik is known for soccer, they are best soccer talents,” Prides marquee signing Wartovo Puara Jnr said.
“Rugby league is a kind of new to them.
“We are using the game to change the people there.
“We are not only playing rugby but we are going into the communities driving the positive things that rugby can do and what this club can do to the communities and its people.”
The PNG Kumuls rake said they are thrilled to host Goroka Lahanis as their first home game at the home turf to kick-off the season.
Pride also pumped to host another eight home games for the season that will see whether this new team finish whether making the top-six cut.
“We’ve got nine home games in Wewak so we all look forward to see it.
“First time to take the Digicel Cup out there so we’ve got first home game against Goroka Lahanis,” he said.
Puara said since moved in to camp in the province, there were fewer interests shown however with first two-opposed sessions and boosted with home games, local supporters and crowd is expected to be there to cheer the home side.
“When we started do our training, we had few visitors and also our opposed trial, that interest was a bit there.
“Once we played and hosted a first home game, we are expecting big crowd there.
We know where we are and we have been training the past weeks but to challenge a Digicel Cup team is even better to know where we are and where to work on to prepare before the game resumes,” Puara told media after their first trial match in Port Moresby againtst Central Dabaris.
